Has come under harsh criticism

South Africa’s new Mining Charter, aimed at increasing black ownership and participation in the sector, has come under harsh criticism from a large faction of the mining industry which claims there will be significant implications for the health of the industry, Mining Tech reports.

The charter is now on hold pending an urgent court interdict brought by the Chamber of Mines.

“This Mining Charter we present to you today is a key instrument for radical change, designed to address many of the inequalities in the mining and minerals sector prior to 2002,” Minister of Mineral Resources Mosebenzi Zwane.
