The Swedish Government's proposal to ban completely the use of uranium has sufficient support in the Parliament Riksdag. Sweden's radio reports that the Center Party, unlike other bourgeois parties, has decided to vote in favour of the proposal.
"We see that renewable society is coming, and there is no room for nuclear power, nor for uranium, which is a dirty refraction. So in combination, we do not see any future for it, "says the Center Party's spokeswoman Helena Lindahl to SR.
There is no uranium extraction in Sweden today, but there is no ban on recovery. According to the Minister for the Environment, Karolina Skog, the government wants it to be "clear" that it is not allowed to break uranium in the country.
Forest, of course, welcomes the Center Party's decision and says it is "extremely pleasing". According to her, this means that residents in potential mining areas can breathe out from August 1st.
To extract uranium in Sweden, three separate conditions are required today, in accordance with three different laws, and the municipality concerned must say yes to the extraction.
The Moderate Conservatives, Liberals, Christian Democrats and Swedish Democrats believe that today's legislation is sufficient.
Among them, it is pointed out that there are not even companies considering uranium extraction in Sweden right now.
According to SD, for example, a total ban on uranium degradation is likely to damage Sweden's reputation as a mining nation.
"If you invite an element, you can ban others," says Mattias Bäckström Johansson, SD, to SR.
In Finland, there is also (at the moment) no uranium extraction today, but state Terrafame has applied to start uranium extraction in Talvivaara.
