New responsible mining academy aims to address ESG competency gap

Responsible Mining Academy (RMA) is a new online learning platform for the mining industry that aims to equip learners with the knowledge, tools, and skills to better lead or support sustainability and ESG in the mining sector.

In May, the mining ESG experts behind Sympact launched the Responsible Mining Academy (RMA), a new online learning platform for the mining industry that aims to equip learners with the knowledge, tools, and skills to better lead or support sustainability and ESG in the mining sector.

Expectations of mining leaders and professionals are shifting as the industry itself is held to a higher standard. "Corporate sustainability and ESG are no longer optional: they are essential for any responsible, resilient mining company," explain the academy founders Elizabeth Freele and Rachel Dekker : “To help their companies manage risk and improve performance, mining leaders and professionals in a range of functional areas need to have the core knowledge and competencies for robust ESG oversight and management; it is no longer only the sustainability professionals who are engaged in ensuring organisational resilience and responsible business conduct.”

Yet, Less than a third of board members say they feel they have the competence to exercise oversight on ESG, and over 66% think their boards lack a strong understanding of ESG risks affecting their companies. Despite emerging anti-ESG rhetoric in some jurisdictions, wel-governed corporate sustainability continues to be a standard expectation globaly by investors and regulators alike, who recognize its key role in enterprise risk management and organizational resilience.

With ESG ranked as mining’s top risk and mining leaders naming ESG as the industry’s top legal dispute risk for 2024, the Responsible Mining Academy is a response to the growing demand for industry-specific training. The Academy’s modern online learning platform builds on Sympact’  successful in-person practitioner training with mining companies and at industry conferences to equip industry professionals with the practical knowledge, tools, and ski ls to better govern, lead or otherwise support sustainability and ESG in their companies.

Targeted at mining directors, executives, and professionals, the academy's signature courses Mining ESG Primer for Executives and Directors and ESG Primer for Mining Professionals aim to equip industry leaders and professionals with relevant and practical knowledge and ski ls.

Inaugural cohorts for both courses are now accepting applications. Secure your spot today.
