A Finnish citizens' initiative that strives to renew the country's mining law has received 50,000 signatures which will be sent to the Riksdag, the Finnish parliament writes Svenska Yle.
The people behind the initiative want to see major changes in the current mining law.
The initiative considers, among other things, that the minerals found in Finland's soil should belong to the state and the landowners.
In addition, the initiative wants the mining companies to pay more compensation, among other things to replace damage to the environment.
The initiative also wants to see that mining permits are issued only after a procedure has been approved that is approved by the Environmental Protection Act.
