Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) has extended its service agreement with Swiss group ABB for hoists by three years and added hoisting motors to its coverage.

The deal is related to the twelve hoists that operate in the Kiruna iron ore mine, and it extends the two companies’ cooperation until at least the end of 2023. Located in northern Sweden, Kiruna is the world’s largest underground iron ore mine, and produces more than 85,000 tonnes per day.

“LKAB places great emphasis on refining every element of the under-ground mining process, in order to make it as efficient as possible,” said Peter Ylivainio, Senior Maintenance Engineer at LKAB, as quoted in a statement. “Mining ore at great depths is a logistical chal-lenge that places demands for a well-functioning infrastructure and safe and resource-efficient production, with well-developed produc-tion methods and processes vital.”

The value of the latest deal was not disclosed in the statement.
