AngloAmerican’s South African subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore has announced the award of a ZAR 1.6 billion (US$100 million) min-ing contract to “a new black owned and community-based joint ven-ture to mine iron ore at its Kolomela Mine in the Northern Cape.”
“The joint venture represents another major advance towards Kumba’s goal of developing sustainable communities and busi-nesses that help transform the South African mining industry,” the company said in a statement. “The contract marks the first in the in-dustry where local community suppliers will be used to run mining operations of this scale and magnitude. The joint venture comprises four 100% black community-owned companies”
Based in Centurion, in the Republic of South Africa, Kumba Iron Ore says it supplies iron ore to the global steel industry.
