To close mines Coal India, the worlds largest producer of coal, has unveiled plans to shut down 37 mines which are no longer economically sustainable. The mines are to be decommissioned in the years 2017 to 2018.

"The identified surplus manpower from these mines would be gainfully redeployed in nearby mines of areas to reduce further loss in these mines," the producer said in a statement.

Coal India says it produces around 84% of India's overall coal production, and has an annual target of about 600 million tonnes for the years 2016 and 2017.
