Record-breaking Finnish train transport of steel rolls

SSAB and VR Transpoint have created a new, highly efficient operating model for transporting steel rolls between the plants, which makes it possible to pre-export 50 percent more than before. Picture: SSAB

Finland's largest freight train started on the Valborg Fair Eve regularly on the route Brahestad-Tavastehus. It is about a mega train weighing 5 200 tonnes and transports steel rolls from Brahestad to Tavastehus. So far, the transport of coils has been done by two trains a day. Now the transport is carried out with a single train.

SSAB and VR Transpoint have created a new operating model that is said to be very effective for shipments between the facilities. So far, steel rolls have been transported by two trains a day from Brahestad to Tavastehus. In the future, the same amount is transported by a single large train, a so-called Megatåg.

The mega train weighs a total of 5 200 tonnes of cargo. The record-breaking train for domestic traffic can transport a total of 3 800 tonnes of steel at a time, which is more than 50 percent more than before.

The train has 52 cars, and it has the length of 690 meters. The mega train will transport over a million tonnes annually.

-Larger trains provide more efficient transport. We can transport more freight with fewer trains. In addition, to optimize resource use, environmental benefits also contribute to reducing emissions from traffic. The effects are noted throughout the transport system, says Tero Kosonen, Sales and Marketing Director at VR Transport, in a press release.
