The company Kaunis Iron AB wants to be able to drive trucks with 90 tons gross weight. A letter of intent has been signed for the Swedish Transport Administration to commence work on the roads in the area in northern Sweden.
The company wants to be able to drive trucks with iron ore concentrate between the iron ore mine in Kaunisvaara and Pitkäjärvi.
Recently, Helena Eriksson, Regional Director, Trafikverket and Anders Sundström, Chairman, Kaunis Iron AB wrote in the letter of intent for implementing road infrastructure measures. The Swedish Transport Administration will also strengthen maintenance on the roads.
- It is gratifying that we have reached this letter of intent and can continue with the road infrastructure between Kaunisvaara and Svappavaara, said Helena Eriksson, Regional Director, the Swedish Transport Administration in a press release.
With the letter of intent, Kaunis Iron is also granted permission to use trucks with 90 tonnes of gross weight under certain conditions.
Co-financing agreement next step
The measures in the state infrastructure will be co-financed by Kaunis Iron. To develop a co-financing agreement is the next step in the process.
Transmissions with 90 tons gross weight impose higher requirements on infrastructure, which goes beyond the state's basic commitment to providing public infrastructure. Therefore, co-financing is required for the Swedish Transport Administration to implement these measures.
Since 2012, the Swedish Transport Administration has transported about 10 of a total of 160 kilometers roads between the mining in Kaunisvaara and the transshipment terminal in Pitkäjärvi (Svappavaara) in the Malm Transport between Kaunisvaara and Svappavaara (MaKS project). Road sections covered are parts of V99, V395, E45, and E10.
