No pit is deeper than the Copper Mine Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, in Utah, USA. The company Kennecott announced newly that the production is to be continued.
Bingham Canyon Mine was founded in 1906 and has been in production since then. The copper mine is of the open pit type, which means that it consists of an open hole in the ground instead of underground passages.
With its incredible 1.2 km to the bottom, Bingham Canyon is the world's deepest open pit.
The open pit was a little shallower in 2013 when 65-70 million cubic meters of soil and stone detached from one side of the open pit and slid down to the bottom - the largest non-volcanic landslide in North America's history. Thanks to warning signals from a security system, no people were injured.
