Scandinavia-based gold exploration and mining company Akobo Minerals has announced the details of the first flight to ever land at a new airstrip which it funded and built in Ethiopia where the miner focuses its gold mining activities.

“The Super King Air 350 twin-turboprop aircraft carried representatives from Akobo Minerals and the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority on the in-augural flight and is a seminal moment in the ongoing development of local business and community activities,” the business said in a state-ment.

The 1,100-metre-long airstrip lies several kilometres away from Akobo Minerals’ mining operation, enabling the company to bring in goods and personnel in a more efficient way, and providing a secure transportation route of gold to Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Jørgen Evjen, the chief executive of Akobo Minerals, said that the “open-ing of our own airstrip is an important landmark for the company and is a clear indication of our capabilities when it comes to major engineering projects as we seek build out our new mining operation.”
